First lesson on Israeli travel: don’t arrive on Saturday.
The four of us arrived at our hotel, tired, bedraggled, travel-weary after 20 hours on the road. The lobby was full of people. "Your rooms, they are not ready. Please wait in the lobby." Well, for how long? "A couple of hours." Shabbat had just ended. People didn’t leave their rooms until sundown. The rooms were just now being made up. Apparently this happens every week at the Eldan Hotel.
The hotel restaurant was closed. The restaurant at the YMCA was closed, preparing for the New Year’s Eve buffet. We went across the street to the King David, crashing through the Bar Mitzvot photo session in the lobby, to the French restaurant downstairs.
Our rooms were nearly ready upon our return. For us, it’s next year in Jerusalem. Tonight, though, we sleep.
