I've become a fan of The Big Picture, which once or twice a week posts Big Pictures of, usually, some current news event or human interest subject. Scale matters, and now that most of us are on broadband connections it's an inconsequential matter to view larger images online.
I'm testing my Daily Photo at a larger scale over on my Test site, and plan to make the conversion to larger images there soon. As soon as we can solve the issue of the live feed to my main website.
I've shied away from that because it ends up making portrait format images smaller than landscape format. Rather a big deal on oblong formats like 35mm. The greater impact of large images just gets highlighted as you go through a set of images sized like that. The big landscape format images jump out and smack you, while the smaller portrait format images seem to shrink away from you by comparison.
It'll be cool to see how that works out over the long term.

Doug,
I like the larger format much better than the smaller one you have been using. Much more impact seeing a 'Big' picture than a small one. 800 pixels seems to be a good compromise. I upload my images to Flickr at 1280 pixels max, which allows people to look at them much larger if they wish, without uploading (and giving away) the full resolution image.
