I'm overhauling my website, and perhaps I can get some crowdsourced input for my portfolio selection. Here is what has brought me this far.
An ASMP panel on photographers' websites made me realize how out of date my current web presence is. My goals are: simple, fast viewing. Easy to get an overview. A big, screen-filling presentation. A place for my videos. A new home for the blog. After a lot of pondering and comparisons, I went with Rob Haggart's A Photo Folio.
The college portfolios are a separate issue. It's my general portfolio that I'm struggling with. “General” is a dirty word in photography presentation. You're supposed to have a memorable niche, so a client knows what to use you for. Problem is, I've been anything but a niche photographer my entire career. My work output is completely agnostic regarding subject, and for that reason I've rejected even separating “People” and “Location” into their own portfolios. I've decided to keep my work promiscuously intermingled.
I have an “A” pile and a “B” pile, in these two Flickr sets. Here is my request: would you visit the “A” set, and comment on anything that absolutely sticks out as not belonging? In the “B” pile, tell me if something should shift to the “A” list.
Praise feels nice, but it is not the most useful feedback. Most valuable to me is learning which of my children I need to kill off.
Here are the links.
