I didn't convert to ProRes, I just imported my folder of clips from the day into Final Cut. I quickly reviewed what I had, I made some in-out points, and I threw it into a timeline. The one cheat was the sound. I was by a busy road with lots of conversation nearby, so I imported the footage from when I shot the snow geese last year, and used that sound instead.
Without the conversion the playback was choppy and needed rendering. Even then, Final Cut was unhappy, but I went directly to an Export-Quicktime Conversion to H.264, auto key frame and data rate, medium quality output, and I had a 720x404 file to upload. Fifteen minute edit, eight minute conversion. Upload and out of here.
